Welcome to the Real Women, Real Business series!

This is the second interview series that I have done. The first one was very popular so I decided to do another one!

Before I left my corporate job, I was so in awe (and still am) of women who had taken the leap and set up their own business. I wanted to know how they came up with their idea and what gave them the courage to finally go for it.

When I set up IWMLBproject I decided to interview women who had launched their own successful businesses. It is so interesting to read about the ‘how’ and the ‘why’ from real-life down-to-earth women just like you and me.

Here are the other interviews if you want to have a read!

This week’s interview is with the founder of Hazel Haven, which helps small businesses grow their online presence.

This post may contain affiliate links. It won’t cost you any extra but I may receive a small commission. I don’t have ads on the site (as I hate them) so this is how I help with the blog running costs. I only recommend things I use or that would be useful to you.

An interview with Lindsey Hazel, an Online Educator for Small Businesses!

What is your business?

I’m an online educator over at I teach small business owners how to grow their online presence so they can stand out online with confidence.

What was your previous job?

I was a Marketing Director at a small tech company.

What made you decide you wanted to leave your corporate job?

I was laid off but knew that I wanted a change because I was working 60+ hours a week and didn’t have a life outside of work. Being laid off forced me into a change and it ended up being the best thing that could have happened.

How did you decide what business to set up?

Since I worked in Marketing I knew that I would be able to help others with social media and other media services.

What was the first step you took once you decided to start the business?

I opened an LLC and mapped out a quick business plan for getting clients.

Was everyone supportive of your idea?

Did you have an ‘emergency fund’ to tide you over while you set up your business or did you start it on the side while still at work?

Yes – I started my blog as a gardening blog while I was still working. I morphed that blog/website into what it is today.

Did you have to get any outside investment to get going?

Did you take any courses or qualifications?

I took a few online courses because online marketing is VERY different than corporate marketing/print media.

I have a blog post if you’re interested:

Did you have any particular fears about starting a business and if so how did you get over them?

In my first year I was worried that I might fail, but I always reminded myself of the skills that I already had from my previous jobs and that if I didn’t try how would I know if it didn’t work out?

Plus I am continuously comforted by the poem by Erin Hanson that says,

“There is freedom waiting for you,

On the breezes of the sky,

And you ask “What if I fall?”

Oh but my darling,

What if you fly?”

What was the hardest thing about setting up the business?

Showing my face for my business. I preferred to hide behind my logo.

Did you make any mistakes when you were setting up?

Of course. I listened to a lot of online business gurus instead of listening to my intuition. I focused on my branding, website and creating an online course instead of making profit and growing my audience.

How long did it take before you made enough for a full-time income?

Two years. The first year was spent learning the ins and outs of an online business. The second year was much better!

How do you manage your time? Do you take certain days off?

My family and home responsibilities come first.

I always take the weekends off and batch a lot of tasks on certain days so I can do minimal work during the week.

For instance, I will batch 4 videos at a time and then I will edit the video then create a blog post for that topic and distribute it throughout the week so I’m not doing too much at once but am still being productive.

Do you ever procrastinate and how do you deal with it?

Yes, I used to fall into procrasti-perfection. I would perfect things so much that I was procrastinating.

If I find myself procrastinating on something, I step away from it and then plan an action plan for what I need to do to get it done. Then I take action and tackle it.

Now I remind myself that a good plan today is better than a great plan tomorrow. Done well is better than perfect.

Plus, I started a membership called Action Taker Haven ( for other online business owners and that helps me not procrastinate anymore too!

How do you market your business?

Pinterest, Instagram and YouTube are my favorite ways to market my business.

What is your favourite thing about having your own business?

The flexibility to create my own schedule.

What book, podcast or anything else would you recommend to women who want to start their own business.

I recently listened to Girl Wash your Face by Rachel Hollis and loved it.

Which female entrepreneur most inspires you?

Elna Cain from Twins Mommy ( and (

And finally,

What is the one piece of advice you would give to women who want to start a business?

Going back to the poem quoted earlier:

There is freedom waiting for you,

On the breezes of the sky,

And you ask “What if I fall?”

Oh but my darling,

What if you fly?” – Erin Hanson

how to come up with a business idea when you have no clue
